Lucky 2007

A new year should begin with the promise of happy happenings. Sometimes this is difficult, for example if you are stuck in an mind-numbing job with repellent colleagues, your hair and teeth are falling out, you've contracted gonorrhea, your money is spent, your shoes are hopelessly out of style, and you can't quit smoking a pack a day lest you transform from medically obese to morbidly obese. Thankfully, I am suffering from none of these ailments thus far in 2007!

Indeed, the year has started rather well. My PhD research is coming along (slowly) and there is already some prospect of having the dissertation published as a book. This work and a related project at the Business Tax Centre have kept me quite busy since December – herein lies my excuse for not blogging. Triathlon training with the Oxford club is also going swimmingly, despite the nagging feeling of inadequacy that comes with doing 3000m swim sessions and 80km cycling rides alongside student-athletes ten years younger. The title is "elder" god for good reason. The ass remains an issue, but constant attention to rehab has produced improvement.

Perhaps the best thing about 2007 is that the Canucks are finally going to win the Stanley Cup. Good gracious is Luongo the best man in town! Is there anyone in Vancouver, male or female, who would not sleep with this man right now? It's sad that we cannot watch the games over here, but it is pleasant to check the scores in the morning and almost always see a good result. 3-0 over Colorado in Colorado!?! Hurrah to that! Now if Naslund can start scoring again when the playoffs begin… great things will be in store for the team-of-destiny.

Stones him!

The other positive development is that Ms Muppet and I are already entertaining academic job prospects for the future. It's rather early for this to be happening – most people seek posts in the third or fourth year of their PhD – but one has to grasp opportunities as they arise. More to come on this as the possibilities evolve.

The internet: is that thing still around? A blog entry? Well done Gned! Glad to hear that your time at Hogwarts is going swimmingly and that you're nearing your goal of being able to quit smoking in 2008.

Luongo is indeed a god. I think he might be Wotan, but he could be Quetzalcoatl. The last five minutes of a Canuck game are now a period of eerie calm rather than white-knuckle time. I am sure that Canuck fans will live 1-2 years longer thanks to Roberto.

I also think we will win the Stanley Cup this year. We won't be outgoaltended in any series, and doesn't a great goalie like Luongo deserve a cup? I think so.

Best of luck to you and the adorable muppety one in your academic job hunt.

A blog from Gned??? Are such things possible?? Wow, how cool would that be to have your dissertation published. You rule!

I must admit I keep forgetting to watch the Canucks games. I've become complacent thanks to their winning ways. Perhaps if those of us in Vancouver got together to watch them more often... hint, hint.
